Virtually all cultured pearls are bleached to improve color and allow better matching of strands. Pearl bleaching is generally regarded as an acceptable practice in the industry.

Chemical bleach is a popular color enhancer but will dissolve pearl nacre. Ironically this treatment is usually performed on thin- nacred pearls, with the bleach eating away at what little nacre there is.
