Pearl oysters
The following is a list of the various types of oysters and other mollusks that produce pearls.
Black-Lip oyster An oyster of large size found in the South Pacific that produces black pearls known as Tahitian Pearls. Other colors produced are silver, dark gray, orange, gold, green, blue, and purple.
Gold-Lip oyster The large oyster, found off Australia, Indonesia, Philippines and Japan, which produces golden South Sea pearls.
Pinctada Fucata The industry term for the saltwater mollusk that produces Akoya cultured pearls.
Pinctada Maxima oyster The industry term for the white-lip oyster that produces South Sea cultured pearls.
Pinctada Margaritifera The industry term for the saltwater mollusk that produces Tahitian cultured pearls.
Uniondae Hyriopsis Schlegeli This freshwater mussel, common in China, produces a strong pearl with thick nacre and a bright luster. Its pearls range in color, including plum, lavender, peach, apricot, curry, red pepper, cinnamon, celery and sage.
White-Lip oyster White-lip oysters are large oysters found in the waters around Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan. These oysters produce good-sized South Sea cultured pearls whose tints range from silver-white to pink and cream.
