Saltwater pearls
Saltwater pearls are found in saltwater oysters and other mollusks around the world. Some of the better known places for saltwater pearls include the Phillipines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Burma in Southeast Asia.
Australia and Tahiti in the South Pacific are where some of the largest pearls are grown, such as the South Sea pearls and Tahitian black pearls. Other well known areas are near the Arabian Sea in the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and near Sri Lanka.
The most popular, and arguably the best quality, saltwater pearls are the Akoya pearls and the South Sea pearls, which are typically much larger than Akoyas.
Saltwater pearls are usually more costly than freshwater pearls because of higher production costs and scarcity.
